Starting Off: Eyeliner

Eyeliner was the first make up product I ever used! How crazy?! I remember getting a free BarryM bronze eyeliner in a magazine when I was about 13 and that's where the journey began! I applied it horrendously and definitely had bits of it stuck in my eyelashes. Not to mention the fact that I used to wear it without wearing mascara - so alongside my then-blonde eyelashes I looked a tad disastrous!

When applied in some ways, it is a way of opening up your eyes and whilst when applied in other ways it's a mechanism of drawing more attention to them. I would honestly say that providing you stick to your lash lines or water lines, you can't really apply eyeliner wrong! Where you apply it definitely has an effect on it's look, but no two people apply eyeliner the same.

Lash Line: This is my favourite way of applying eyeliner. I draw a line along my upper lash line, starting thin at the inner corner and building thickness towards the outer corner. I think that this, teamed with mascara on only my upper lashes, really opens up my eyes and makes them look far brighter. If you're going for a more smoky, darker look, applying liner to your bottom lash line can have a great effect. I think that this makes my eyes look a tiny bit too dark though so I tend to only do this on special occasions. Applying coloured liners underneath your bottom set of lashes can also have a lovely effect at showing off your eye colour.

Water Line: I would say that this is the most common Starting Off technique I found when I began to use make up. It's probably the easiest method to perfect. This method of application can make your eyes look a little thinner and more closed and again, is good for a smokier eye. I personally don't like to use this method as it tends to clash with the roots of my lashes that can be quite hard to reach with mascara. It also has a tendency to smudge off easier which irritates me!

Pencil: When I began using make up, I would have said that this was the most common type of liner on the market, but right now I would say that pencil and liquid liner are on an equal level. It's probably the easiest type to apply and the only liner that really sticks to your water line. It's main form is kohl, a soft, crayon-like material that glides onto your skin.

Myself wearing pencil liner on the outer corner of my upper lash line. i don't like to make it too obvious - I just like it to look like my lash line is thicker than it actually is.
Here, I have liquid eyeliner on my upper lash line and I have applied some pencil liner to my water line.

Liquid: On par with pencil eyeliner, this is a very popular type of liner. It's great for upper lash line application and tends to be far more precise than pencil liner. Usually comes in brush-and-pot or felt tip form.

On these photos I have liquid liner on my upper lash line. You can see how it's really opened up my eyes and made them look much wider.
Gel: The newest of the types of eyeliners. It usually comes in a little pot with a stiff brush applicator. It's perhaps easier to apply than liquid eyeliner to apply but often requires a few coats and a little practice before it's as precise as you'd like it!

(Unfortunately I don't own any gel liners at the minute! They have a similar look to liquid eyeliner when on my upper lash line however they tend to look a little more blended)

My favourites:

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion: This liner literally does glide on and is the blackest of black. It's as dark as I'd like it after only one sweep of the pencil and it is easily blended to create a smoky look. I absolutely adore it and plan to repurchase as soon as I run out! It's so worth the £14!

Lancôme Le Crayon Khôl Noir: This is a more grey colour, even though it's described as being black. It's really easy to blend and perfect for those days where I don't want too much of a stand out look. A little goes a long way and it doesn't budge all day. It's a little pricey at £16 but it's a nice little treat to your eyes!

Collection Extreme Felt Tip Liner: This is my all-time favourite mascara. I love it more than words can describe!! It's so dark and doesn't crack once on your eyelid. It's really easy to be precise with and I love how long it lasts. I bought my first one in July and I'm still using that very same liner now! It's such a bargain too at £2.99. I love it love it love it.

Swatches after one glide: Top to bottom; Urban Decay, Lancôme, Collection.
