Starting Off: Concealer

Concealer is a fantastic product. It is used for covering up those bits of your skin that you aren't quite keen on people seeing, from dark circles under your eyes to spots. It is a key product for creating a flawless look to your skin. There are so many different types, a few if which I will explain:

Pens. These usually have a brush like applicator and  you twist the product into the tip. These concealed are usually quite thin and also tend to act as highlighters. Good for pale skin and light coverage. Also work well on lightening dark circles.

Sticks. When I stay stick I mean a lip balm style applicator. These tend to be quite thick and ideal for cover spots. They usually have a clay like texture and have a long wear time. Not too blendable.

Wands. These come in tubes like a lip gloss! They're not as thick as sticks nor as thin as pens. These are usually quite creamy and really blendable. Great for covering dark circles and blemishes.

Pots. These can have all sorts of textures, depending on which brand you go for! They can be creamy or clay-like and are applied with a brush or your fingers! Usually super blendable so good for spots and dark circles. Although exact purpose usually depends on texture.

How you apply concealer depends on where you're putting it! Under my eyes I tend to dab on some product, usually using a brand with a wand applicator, and blend it with either my Real Techniques Pointed Foundation Brush or a CLEAN finger! It's important to blend your concealer right up to your bottom lash line for an even finish. Don't pick a colour too light either, it is best to go for something only a little lighter than your natural skin tone. For spots, I would initially say that it is really important to get a concealer that matches your skin tone almost exactly. If not you will be left with light patches all over your face that could end up looking just as bad as the bare spot did - if not worse! I tend to dab and blend concealer over spots using my fingers, as this way a good coverage is much easier to build.

I have had a few concealer blunders. I once bought a really cheap pen from Wilko and it was just awful. It was own brand and about two shades lighter than my skin so I had dodgy white circles around my eyes and on my spots. I've also applied stick concealers under my eyes before that we're way thicker than my foundation so they stayed on way longer the rest of my makeup and I looked a little odd, what with my scaly under eyes.

Over the years though I have established some favourites! Surprise surprise, I adore Collection's Lasting Perfection wand-style concealer (£4.19). I use shade Light 2 and its perfect for covering the dark circles under my eyes. It's not too thick, nor too thin and it blends really well. It really does last too and it doesn't dry too matte so when teamed with my foundation it's quite sheer. For my spots I use bareMinerals concealer, also in Light 2 (£21.00), which comes in a little pot. It's really good for spots and blemishes as it has a cream to powder finish and it isn't too cakey so it doesn't make the spots stand out more than they do without make up, which I think some concealers can do.

Left - Collection Lasting Perfection, you can see it has pinker undertones and works better at covering under-eye circles as it doesn't give me bright eyes! Right - bareMinerals Correcting Concealer, more yellow undertones, great for spots and blemishes.
Concealer is such an essential part of my make up routine and it gives me real confidence as it helps me hide any of my skin hiccups!

What are your favourite concealers?

Lots of love, Steph xxxx
